WE CAUGHT THE LADY IN RED

Oscar nominated Costume Designer for True Grit and Friend of Decades, Mary Zophres, looks fabulous in her vintage red Carolyn Roehm at last night's Academy Awards! We love this screen cap!

I Coulda Been a Contender

The Academy Awards might be over but true Hollywood glamour will never end. This amazing Givenchy Haute Couture butter yellow chiffon gown would have looked ravishing on the red carpet last night. Sadly, it didn't make it in time for the awards. Now their loss is your gain!

The title quote is form Elie Kazan's award winning classic, "On the Waterfront" and was spoken by the legend himself, Marlon Brando. The bodice of this dress makes sure that your goods stay where they should as you're dancing around the ring. And the silver and pale yellow Swarovski crystals adorning the halter that eliminate the need for a necklace. This is one of those gorgeous and effortless gowns that will remain forever timeless.

Weighted Down

We bring you the return of one of Decades fav designers, "Anonyme." We do not know who made this late 70s draped jersey gown, but we do know it's hot, hot, hot and made beautifully. The crystal trim and straps attach to a very sexy "wiggle" dress that has a hint of Kamali and Azzaro styling. With a back that goes about as low as one may go, the dress is cleverly designed with an internal weight that insures you shake your booty without busting a move. A second weight is also installed at the front of the dress so you are secured not to have a Janet Jackson moment. It's a clever engineering idea to put the weights in this dress at pivotal points. Just be aware that you will likely set the metal detector when going through security in this jersey number, but we assume you aren't wearing this to the Airport!

BLASS, REALLY BLASS!

When this 1970s era Bill Blass chiffon print halter dress came our way, we all had a double take. After all, the red dot print on egg shell chiffon is vaguely reminiscent of Celia Birtwell; the bugle bead asymmetric sash seems more Disco Downtown Diva, than Park Avenue socialite, and the halter plunges low in the front and the back...in other words, not what we typically expect from the master of Ladies Who Lunch attire. All these contradictions, make the dress even more special.

We have been encouraging prints from a while now, and we feel this print may just be the right option and introduction for those with print "reservations." The sash may be tied around the waist and hang in the front or the back and the intricate bugle bead work was just expertly restored by local nimble hands. We love unexpected designs from great names and we are thrilled to share this Bill Blass with you.

Let the Sunshine!

It's pouring outside and I am over it! The sun needs to come back and I need to bask in the rays of Ra's (Egyptian Sun God) glory. To help induce this I have decided to post this amazing bright yellow Ossie Clark dress. I really want to go hiking tomorrow, so lets hope this offering to Ra works!

The dress is a classic Ossie wool crepe long sleeve with buttons all down the front from the over sized collar to the mid thigh. The princess cuffs add a sense of whimsy, and the bright yellow color is perfect for all those upcoming Easter events. Now I implore all of you to make your own sacrifice to the sun God of your choosing (nothing crazy people, keep it clean and legal) and Let the Sunshine.

Obviously I feel the need for a little musical theatre today, so I've posted a video to help you make it through the rain!

Architecturally 2 Late...

Sadly this architectural plum satin Arnold Scaasi dress sold before we could post it on the blog, but it did sell to someone fabulous that we LOVE.

The dress was a wonderfully rich shade of purple, the sort that would be reserved for royalty. The bodice came to a peak just to the left of the bust, then the material gathered at the waist and was finished of with a series of three bows. This little cocktail dress was made for a grand entrance and nothing less.

Spring Awakening

You would never know it from looking at the sky over LA today, but spring is upon us. To be exact it will officially begin on March 20th at 7:21 EDT (Eastern Daylight Time). Time to put the coats away and bring out that perfect little sun dress for a jont around town. There is (almost, [and you know who you are]) nothing I would rather be seen walking next to than a beautiful woman sporting this navy jersey halter dress.

This dress is Anonymous, but reminds me of the the designs that were coming from James Galanos in the early 70's. The trim around the neck and top of the dress is a navy grosgrain ribbon with white polka-dot pattern that has a very nautical feeling. Pair this with a large pair of round white frame sunglasses, gladiators and a wide brim straw hat to complete the look.

In celebration of spring I have provided a clip from one of my favorite musicals of all time, Spring Awakening! Now sit back and enjoy the wonder that is the original Broadway cast performing at the Tonys.

Thank you Los Angeles Confidential Magazine for including Cameron Silver in their feature about the five Angelenos who define great style.

Luxurious Lacroix

If you are in LA this weekend, chances are you have an event or five to attend. Oscar week is like Christmas, New Years, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and your sixteenth birthday all rolled into one. As you can probably guess this is high season here at Decades. For that reason we are rolling out the ball gowns at high speed to for all you lovely ladies that need the "perfect dress."

The Christian Lacroix gown below is an amazing iridescent rose taffeta adorned with a gold and lacquer floral/butterfly brooch. The full skirt is achieved by layers of soft multi-colored tulle gently tucked beneath the taffeta. The house of Christian Lacroix sadly is no longer with us, making this stunning gown a piece of fashion history.

OSCAR MADNESS

Anyone in Los Angeles right now can feel the Oscar buzz. There are parties every night and the energy in the city is quite exhilarating. Our phones are ringing off the hook with jet setters inquiring about what to wear to various events; and we are having fun playing dress up with our clients from around the world who are spending the week in LA in prep for the big day on Sunday. I've often described Award Season as Hollywood's extended Christmas, but without Santa Claus.

In honor of the Oscars, I thought it would be appropriate once again to write about Oscar de la Renta since he is always a go-to during award season. This navy pleated jersey one shoulder gown reminds me of the work of both Madame Gres and Jean Desses who are two legends of Couture who defined the Goddess style of dressing with incredible pleating and frequent use of one shoulder silhouettes. Paying homage to both Gres and Desses, ODLR drapes the shoulder and top of the dress in an intricate mix of pleating in a wonderful pattern. The skirt remains totally fluid and sensually moves as you walk. I am always partial to evening gowns in midnight blue. The color is so sophisticated and elegant. Oscar de la Renta makes clothes that are always appropriate and that's a very reassuring feeling when you just want to look fabulous. You don't see his dresses on the Worst Dressed lists. Rather a woman in Oscar always looks like a winner and should be carrying a gold statue (aka the Oscar)!

Just a tad late!

We sorta missed the boat on this dress, it would have been perfect to wear on Valentine's Day! C'est la vie, I'm sure there's another perfect occasion to rock this white and red wonder. The dress is a heavy weight silk satin with a vibrant red lace crystal encrusted peek-a-boo trim under the skirt. The one spaghetti strap perfectly balances out the A-symmetric diagonal cut skirt. This is a fun flirty little Gianni Versace cocktail dress perfect for date night!
