NOT EVERYTHING FROM THE 80S LOOKS LIKE TODAY'S BALMAIN

Most of you have grown accustomed to the fascination on current runways with 80s-inspired fashions exemplified by the exciting work of Christophe Decarnin at the House of Balmain, which should be called the House of Bling Bling, but we love it! However, not everything about teh 1980s was about bells and whistles. Many designers from the 80s favored simplistic and architectural designs such as Calvin Klein and Gianfranco Ferre, who is represented below. (For fashioninstas, yes, we know Ferre did his share of over the top of fashions, but for the sake of this argument, please indulge us!)

Talk about simple: an over-sized purple suede "tee shirt" dress with exaggerated sleeves that narrows at the hips. It may be from the early 80s, but it could be Phoebe Philo for Celine, considering her chic and minimal debut runway collection that left editors and buyers excited as someone was finally doing sensual day wear that was appropriate to wear without looking like a hooker. That's what this day dress does: it is chic and simply seamed; it is sensual (nothing feels yummier than suede); it is functional (tights and flat boots); it is appropriate (doesn't show excessive skin, yet is feminine); do we need to go on? Try it with a wide belt and give your suede tee a little "blouse" and it takes on an entierely new look.

GYPSY WOMAN

Another one of those Decades 101 requirements is to own a vintage Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche peasant blouse from the 1970s. In Every woman is a Gypsy Woman who needs to come out and play every so often. This particular cotton voile blouse in a blue, purple, and brown paisley motif is enhanced with woven gold lurex thread. It is completely year round dressing and goes from "cas" with a pair of jeans; to dressy with cigarette pants in two seconds flat, but don't wear flats :) There's nothing wrong with wearing this blouse with the elastic top exposing a pair of bronzed shoulders on a cruise with a pair of white short-shorts and espadrilles (cruise season is rapidly approaching for those who actually know how to "holiday"). Gosh, writing about holidays makes Team Decades think we need a Family Vacation, but we have sartorial responsibilities to our beloved clients!

Mid-Day Boost

Give your bust a boost with this lovely little black Chanel bustier. The material is very interesting, it is a viscose nylon blend that has the appearance of grosgrain ribbon up close. From a distance the material resembles a moss crepe. The lining is a black silk satin that has extensive boning throughout the bustier. Lining the bottom and the two front pockets is a black satin ribbon that is also used for the bow in the center of the garment. This is a very versatile piece that can be dressed up with a full skirt or worn casually with a pair of jeans.

L'historie du Decades (Deux)

Now for the second installment of the Decades framed scarves. This pair of Peter Max scarves are perfect for that art collector who has everything. IL BRONZINO

No this dress was not designed by the 16th Century Florentine Mannerist master Agnolo di Cosmio (aka Il Bronzino), but we like to call this Halston dress Il Branzino as the spaghetti strapped bronze paillette dress in a sophisticated bias cut is the perfect alloy ally in your closet! Snug around the bust and mid-section, the dress flares out around the hips and begs for it's next wearer to twirl on a dance floor. Yet another treasure from the collection of a former Giorgio of Beverly Hills employee!

L'historie du Decades

This is your chance to own a piece of Decades history. The photo above was taken at the at the Decades launch party in 1997 (yes, it has been over 12 years). Hanging on the walls were amazing Pucci scarves encased in clear Lucite frames by Aesthetic Frame and Art Services. Each scarf has been meticulously stitched to a raw silk backing and mounted on a board. As we no longer have room for the scarves and frames we have decided to sell them. This will be the first of several posts to offer the artwork that once donned the walls of Decades. This is your chance to transform any room in your house into Decades.

A Rose by Any Other Name...

Giorgio Sant Angelo made this lovely little navy jersey dress. The simple shape is offset by an unexpected little detail on the bust. The bright pink rosette has two long bright green "stems" that fall down almost the entire length of the dress. Just about anything can be done with the stems. Tie them up and around the neck for a halter effect, to the sides and around the waist for a Empire waist, the possibilities are only limited by ones imagination. This is on of those simple dresses that can be worn without much fuss.
