SUNDAY CHIC

It's a gorgeous Sunday in Los Angeles. After having an icky cold the past few days, I finally feel energized and ready to blog! As it is Sunday and a day to relax, this Bill Tice design seems very appropriate to share with you. Tice was famous for his 1970s casual, yet elegant jersey lounge wear - the type of things to actually wear on Sundays. This periwinkle dress is not your mother's housecoat! It has a toga-vibe with gathered shoulders and under each arm the excess fabric drapes beautifully down to the hem. Today you could wear this dress out with some chunky jewelry and go just about anywhere. Bill Tice may be famous for dressing women for time spent at home, but I think his designs deserve to shine out in public too.

If I had to pick one thing that Chanel was great at, it would have to be the LBD. Yes, we all know the bags are amazing, costume jewelry is unrivaled, and No.5 needs no mention! But nothing compares to the simple elegance of a Chanel little black dress, especially when paired with the previously mentioned.

This strapless LBD stays true to everything that Coco, and the brand that she created has come to stand for. The perfectly ruched black chiffon bodice is tied off with a single strip of black satin ribbon to one side in a bow. The skirt is elegant long black bias cut chiffon and looks amazing when in motion. Holding you tight is a strand of pearl buttons all down the back, each with a small gold CC logo.

Instruments No More!

The crème de la crème of leather jackets has come our way once again. The amazing natural leather jacket by East West Musical Instrument Company is the stuff of rock legend. In the 60's and 70's these jackets were donned by the coolest rockers, poets and artists around. The very first jacket was sold to Janis Joplin herself. HEART HOLLY HARP

Growing up in Los Angeles in the1970s and 80s, I became pretty familiar with the work of
Holly Harp. I have memories of sitting on a couch in her store while my mother shopped the sample sales. Holly Harp dressed so many people in my hometown that I am always looking for her pieces. Although she was most popular for her use of fluid jersey and dressing rock stars like Stevie Nicks, this Holly Harp dress isn't in jersey and is more for the Disco than the Troubadour.

If the Great Gatsby merged with Studio 54, this would be Daisy Buchanan's look. This "flapper" dress features four thin straps to create a V shaped-neckline and back; plus tiers of iridescent fringe for a shimmy sensation. It's super light and flirty and an unusual example of Holly Harp's designs. Many years ago, we mounted a Holly Harp retrospective at Decades which included incredible early designs from the late 1960s and early 1970s. I only wish we had all those pieces still! Certainly, they have all found amazing homes and this Holly will find a great home, too.

ANOTHER OSCAR TRIUMPH

Oscar nominee Todd Lieberman (one of the Producers of The Fighter) attended the Academy Awards with his beautiful wife Heather, who wore a fantastic vintage Bob Mackie from Decades and I love how she added the pop of red by carrying the bright clutch on the red carpet. Well done!

THE NEW NECK

How would you describe this neckline? There's a halter under a bugle bead wrap. Is there a fashion term for such a neckline? I think not, so let's just call this "the new neck." And it may just be my favorite neckline. I don't know much about the designer Jesper Nyeboe other than he was born in Denmark, worked for Anne Klein, Geoffrey Beene, and Gloria Vanderbilt; and his eponymous house existed for a very brief time in the late 1970s. He died too young at the age of forty-five in 1989. I am really intrigued by his work as I always have a penchant for designers that are under the radar or have been forgotten. This silk crepe gown would look chic worn poolside barefoot or dressed-up with some sparkly heels. The color is subtle and unusual, yet there is just enough razzmatazz with the bugle bead straps and the revealing back to make this a memorable dress for many an occasion: day or night; beach or disco; grass lawn or red carpet!

Biba, not Bieber!

If you're going to chaperone (we know you bought the tickets and grabbed the closest child to drag to the concert, you're not fooling anyone) an unruly gaggle of pre-teens to a Bieber concert, might we recommend this fuchsia crepe Biba dress.

It is fun and flirty without being trashy (you know what I mean, the mom in a denim-mini and neon green tube top three rows in front. Not cute.). The high collar to an open bust with capped shoulders and long sleeves. The light weight wool crepe will keep you nice and cool amidst the throngs of convulsing pre-teens. Good luck to you!
