SIMPLY HALSTON

This month's Decades window pays tribute to Halston, a legendary American designer who revolutionized American fashion. Because Cameron is in Cannes to attend the premiere of Versailles '73 - An American Runway Revolution, a documentary that tells the story of what was to be a fundraiser to restore Versailles, turned into a competition between French Haute Couture and American Ready to Wear. American designers won. This windows, created by the über talented Jeff Snyder, celebrate just that.

HALSTON, ANDY AND THE CAT PACK

Warhol produced images to run as adverts for Halston in Interview and promotion in Halston store.
Both Halston and Warhol, were pleased to be identified with each others 'brand'.
Warhol was now working with a new print assistant, Rupert Jasen Smith, a gifted artist in his own right, and a genius with silk screen prints. His knowledge refired Warhols enthusiasm for the medium. Warhol gave Smith credit for his innovation, on the diamond dust pictures for example, Warhol said "The diamond dust fell off of one of Rupert's pictures on to one of mine."
Warhol and Smith experimented with print methods and inks, on this richly colored print they utilised both flat and gloss inks to give it an amazing depth and presence.

This printed skirt in silk comes with a crinoline petticoat and crystals heat press applied on parts of the skirt and on the Warhol signature. It is a beautiful piece that incorporates the works of two very important personalities in the American culture.

CHANEL IN CANNES

Uncle Karl has not lost his magic, from when he started at Chanel in 1983 with beautiful creations like this dress, to his most recent Cruise collection shown in Versailles. He has always given us major moments especially with his mix of high end details applied on casual fabrics like denim or chambray in this case. This dress represents that very mix. It is very Chanel and at the same time very Lagerfeld. 

We love the color, the fitted silhouette, the pleats on the pockets and gold buttons all the way in the back. It is fully lined in silk, has a built in corset and you can leave few buttons open to show more leg. 

Since we have been mad about Cannes these days, what a better way to celebrate the French than with  chic Chanel.

CITIZEN CANNES

Ever since Cameron left for Cannes to attend his movie premiere, Versailles '73, we have been inspired by the French Riviera and been feeling colors and prints. We will be posting today amazing pieces from vintage Chanel to Pucci and a very iconic Ossie Clark print dress, all Cannes inspired. 

Some of the most striking Pucci ensembles were comprised of a shirt, scarf, dress and bag all in the same print. To be garbed in all over Pucci was an idyllic state for many women in the 60's and 70's. Little has changed, since Pucci remains the leader of beautiful prints in the fashion world. To have a Pucci bag to match your Pucci top, that is coordination.

COLOR ME CANNES

If you are headed to Cannes keep in mind that color is key in the French Riviera. We love the vibrant colors that Emilio Pucci is so famous for, especially this beautiful orange mixed with a little motif in brown. The full light cotton skirt could be worn alone with a white Alexander Wang tee and the top could complete your boho chic look with denim shorts. But worn together you will look like you belong in the South of France basking under the Mediterranean sun.

DECADES IN CHICAGO

Decades was in Chicago last weekend bringing to the wind city a collection of vintage and modern carefully put together by our co-owner Christos Garkinos.

CAMERON SILVER PACKS FOR THE FRENCH RIVIERA

There is no doubt that Cameron Silver has a fabulous life. After his smashing appearance at the Met Ball, he is en route to Cannes to attend the premiere of Versailles '73 - An American Runway Revolution by filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper, that celebrates the victory of American Fashion in France in 1973 in an iconic fashion face off at Versailles. Narrated by Cameron Silver, the documentary tells the story of what was to be a fundraiser to restore Versailles that turned into a competition between French Haute Couture and American Ready to Wear. SILVER MEDAL

It's amazing what you'll find on the interweb. Today I was came across sites devotes to cat calendars, precocious tween fashion blogs, a page concerned with bullets and mullets, and a tumblr I had never seen that posts pics of our co-owner, Cameron Silver, in his various notorious ensembles.

Men's fashion doesn't always get the coverage that it deserves, so I was particularly excited to see this site, which rivals the sartorial quotient of any major style site. If you have a penchant for Rod Keenan hats and sharp suits via the likes of Antonio Azzuolo, Alexander McQueen, and Simon Spurr, or simply need a fashion pick me up, Cameron Silver In . . . will definitely sate your fashion palette. I myself, was inspired by the snapshot of Cameron above, donning a vintage Katherine Hamnett leather jacket. Sigh. I just love studded duds.

BELT IT OUT

Ok, so I'm not one for getting too matchy-matchy. But, as soon as I saw the Hermès handbag below, it made me think of this number. There's something kind of glam about accessories that go together. And this black textured belt meets the Kelly at the best possible fashion intersection. If you ask me, it's a green light all the way.

A STAR IS GONE

Here at Decades, we are deeply saddened at the loss of one of fashion's brightest stars, Vidal Sassoon. Throughout his career, Sassoon was always at the forefront of fashion, creating several seminal sartorial aesthetics. It goes without saying that his influence reached far beyond mere hairstyles.

Of course, true beauty is evidenced both inside and out. Perhaps it's because Sassoon was a true gentleman, the epitomé of grace, style, generosity and kindness, that propelled him to become one of fashions greatest innovators.

Cameron Silver, our co-owner along with Christos Garkinos, says of Sassoon, "I have had the pleasure of knowing Vidal Sassoon since 1997 when Decades opened and he attended our opening fete with his wonderful wife Ronnie.  He has always represented to me the power of hard work over adversity to achieve incredible things. He not only revolutionized hair, but was an example of being a responsible citizen of the world through his philanthropy. Vidal was a man of true elegance and taste and I am do honored to have known him. Vidal and Ronnie were early supporters of Decades and my thoughts and prayers are with Ronnie and the Sassoon family. He made the world a better place and will always be an inspiration."

 

Rest in peace, Vidal Sassoon. You are truly and dearly missed.

BEST IN SHOW

I'm kvelling. While scrolling through the Met Gala photos on style.com, I came across this lil' beauty and in the words of Rachel Zoe, "I die(d)." I mean, the chicness just kills me.

Let's discuss. In my humble opinion, there were lots of chic designer/doyenne pairs on the carpet: Joan Smalls and Olivier Rousteing, Ricardo Tisci and Rooney Mara, Chanel Iman and Tom Ford, Stella McCartney and M.I.A, need I go on.

But I have to say, my favorite dazzling duo were Nicole Miller and our very own Cameron Silver. Of course, Nicole looked flawless, the dress, the jewels, the hair, the make-up - all perfection. And it must be noted that the designer was matched perfectly by Cameron Silver, who wore a custom suit in a Nicole Miller print from 1986 and a vintage Schiaparelli walking stick with attached handbag. The bag itself, in true Schiaparelli fashion, took the form of, a sea creature. Talk about getting carried away. In the best possible way.

Take that "IT BAG", what ever carryall you may be this season.The award for best accessory has been won. There was never a competition though. Vintage Schiaparelli can't be beat.

TRAY CHIC

When I lived in New York, my pal Matt brought me over to a certain make-up artist's abode. The entire house was marigold and aqua: the sofa, the rugs, the knick-knacks, the spoons, the cabinet handles, the cloth napkins, the window treatments, the wall sconces. I was pretty amazed. Until a aqua poodle peeked it's sea-colored nose out from behind an aqua chair. Color me astounded.

"Matt, Matt," I tugged my friend's sleeve and whispered, "Um, even the dog matches the decor."

"Oh, that's nothing," he said, completely unfazed. "Six months ago, the entire place was French country and there was a French Bulldog instead. Pierre."

True story.*

While I don't buy pets to go with my interior design choices, I can understand the need to redecorate as often as possible. I love home decor and design. I feed on blogs like Sous Style and The Selby, I'm still bummed that Domino is no longer a monthly rag, and I trowl flea markets on the regular, especially when in Europe, forever in search of just the right wrought iron church alter piece or Japanese vintage pottery.

Every so often, the curatorial team at Decades comes across home pieces that are just too delicious to pass up. Such was the case with this Oscar de la Renta mother-of-pearl inlaid tray with silver inset corner details. You can understand why we took in this tray. It's everything exceptional design should be: elegant and unique with exquisite construction. It stands out in a room, yet helps tie everything together. And let's face it, style isn't simply for the clothes. Style should extend into every facet of your life, including your environs. Except your pets. Pick one. And love him to pieces.

*I found out that the make-up artist rescued the dogs and while he was looking for new homes with caring and kind owners for each of them, he redesigned his apartment to give the pets what he felt would be a soothing environment. Phew. So much better than what I imagined. New Yorkers. We are a crazy breed.

BLACK MAGIC

Designers have been offering several alternative to basic black on the runways for the past few seasons. I've seen so much color blocking, mad prints, and ikat in rainbow bright hues, it makes me want to put down the rose colored glassed and pick up a pair of Lagerfeld opaque black frames.

No matter how many options a girl has instead of donning LBD's, I just can't away from the fact that a beautiful black dress is and always will be, the épitomé of timeless chic. The trick to standing out in an ink colored sea of frocks, is to find an ensemble with an impeccable cut, elegant draping and unique detailing.

Recently, a few of our favorite stylish stars popped by our salon and perused the racks for dresses that would rock the runway. Here's a few of my personal picks for best dressed:

Although Lindsay Lohan caught some flack from Hollywood Life for wearing this Galanos gown (sideboob was the issue at hand), I have to say that I think she knocked it out of the park at a recent White House gala. In my humble opinion, it's sacrilege to question the taste factor of anything made by James Galanos, a favorite of Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and former White House resident, Nancy Reagan. I mean, c'mon. It's kind of hard picturing Mrs. Reagan in anything flashy or too revealing.

And this dress has everything an elegant ensemble should have, including an exquisitely crafted paneled corset waist, which is neither too sexy nor inappropriate for our nation's capitol. More to the point, it's age appropriate. Ladies under 30 should embody youthful, whimsical designs on the red carpet.

Oh, and by the way Hollywood Life, don't think we didn't notice later posts which lauded Lindsay's look. In fact, you spelled out just how to get the starlet's White House style, right down to her lipstick. Hmmm . . .

Nobody knows how to rock retro glamour quite like Jennifer Tilly, who scored major fashion points in a recent appearance at the opening of her new Broadway production, Don't Dress for Dinner. I'm completely mad for this Dior number, which with it's fitted bodice, 50s style skinny shoulder straps and asymmetrical waist with full skirt, embodies star power. The dress fits's Tilly to a T and ladies, take note. This is how to do sexy while keeping it classy. I also love how Tilly accentuated her look with a little sparkle. The actress dipped into her own collection, pinning a brooch that allegedly belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. As far as diamonds are concerned, you can't go wrong with Elizabeth Taylor's bangles and baubles. They've always brought her luck.

Personally, I'm on the fence when it comes to sheath dresses. I think they can look matronly as opposed to marvelous. But Maya Rudolph's Lanvin black quilted sheath dress at the 2012 Comedy Awards gave me reason to rethink my sheath position.

The elbow-length sleeves and above-the-knee cut on this number save the sheath from seeming too Granny. In fact, I'd say Maya looked quite fashion forward. What sets this sheath apart is the theatric collar. Sometimes, large lapels look great on the catwalk but bizarre on the sidewalk. This collar on the other hand, gives a little drama to the classic cut of the dress, making this choice super stylish, and not silly. Of course, Rudolph, who has sartorial savvy as well as comedic prowess, knows to save the hijinks for on-screen appearances, not the carpet.

UPTOWN GIRLS . . .

Calling all you uptown NYC fashionistas. Have I got good news for you. Decades' second NYC trunk show opened its doors just hours ago. Do ya have a penchant for all things pretty, printed, pleated, platformed or Prada?

Then you're going to want to break out that metrocard and ride toute suite to The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Thrift Shop, 1440 3rd Avenue, between 81st to 82nd, today, Tuesday, May 1 and tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2 from 10am - 5pm each day.

In addition to our usual selection of chic clothing and amazing accessories from Alaia to Zanotti, we've also curated an amazing selection of Prada and Schiaparelli in honor of the two Italian designer's upcoming museum exhibit.

And we'll also be donating 10% of proceeds from the trunk show, PLUS, 10% of all sales from our website, www.shopdecadesinc.com, will be donated to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
