One of our favorite pieces of iconic 20th Century American fashion are the legendary Norman Norell mermaid dresses that were famously designed in the 50s and 60s. We all remember the dynamic midnight blue Normal Norell halter mermaid that Marilyn Monroe wore which simply oozed sex-appeal. The Norell mermaid is quintessential American evening attire. Light as a feather as the pailettes are pain-stacking to apply with a careful hand sewn technique to the silk jersey base. JOHN ANTHONY ADDS DRAMA

This is the time of the year when we get desperate calls from clients asking for help is finding an appropriate cover up for a formal evening gown. Sure, you are only stepping out of the limo and walking 8 feet to the building where a door man will welcome you with a smile and a blast of hot air, but those 8 feet may feel like crossing the tundra when you are in a strappy gown with strappy shoes and the weather outside if frightful. Here comes the incomparable American designer John Anthony to the rescue with a black silk soft taffeta voluminous evening coat with an off-the-shoulder neckline (can be worn on the shoulders of course) and an easy length...it's lined in vanilla silk! It's warm enough for a brief sojourn in the cold and light enough that you won't feel like you are schlepping a blanket. Sure, it's great with evening gowns or cocktail dresses, but we also love it with a black cashmere turtleneck and some man-tailored trousers.

THIS ONE'S FOR THE LADIES

We are going to take it back old school now. Haute Couture. Coco Chanel. Early 1960s. An unusually colored Chanel Haute Couture suit designed by Coco Chanel in a woven boucle of butter yellow and lilac is contrary to Coco's typical palette of black, grey, and white. The previous owner, an American expat who moved to Paris in the 50s and held a place on the Best Dressed List, adored color. The suit is lined in a complimentary floral chiffon and comes with it's coordinating blouse. Although the original owner's granddaughter shortened the skirt, we still think that the classic quality of the suit makes it wonderfully wearable. Truth be told, most of our clients often shorten the skirts of their late 50s and 60s Chanel Couture suits to give them a more modern silhouette. Every woman needs a skirt suit, as moments exist in one's life when it is appropriate to be dressed like a Lady.

As a bonus, but not as a gift with purchase (!), we have listed a navy quilted leather day-to-evening Chanel bag trimmed with the recognizable gold chain from the early 1980s. We say oui, oui, oui to this deliciously hued Hermes royal blue Constance bag in Courchevel leather. The Birkins and Kellys all listed in today's postings come from the same meticulous collection of Hermes bags that were so gently used, it boggles the mind. The previous owner, who has a collection of well over one hundred Hermes bags, was so careful with the bags that she handled them with gloves. As she has such a large selection, they were used rarely on a rotating basis. The color of this bag is intoxicating and we hope you are drunk on it, too.

Now, nearly thirty years later, we are able to offer you this stunning Hermes Constance bag in gorgeous cognac ostrich skin. The exterior is outstanding and the interior has some flaws that are shows in the pictures. This bag is NOT currently available at Hermes (you can only special order an ostrich Constance and it will cost you around $12,000!). Forgive the quality of the photos, but it's dark in LA and our natural light has dissipated along with Daylight Saving Time, but our priority is to satiate our beloved blog readers Hermes dreams.

This is a 40 cm black boxed leather Birkin with palladium hardware. It is from 2006 with a J Stamp. No box, but you get a sleeper bag, lock and key (and felt pouch) and unused rain protector bag. We will even throw in some Hermes ribbon, just for the hell of it. Very gently used...we took it to Hermes today, but they said it doesn't need any reconditioning, so we hope this makes a reader's wish list come true!

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

Although we write to you from sunny in LA (it starts out foggy in the AM, but the sun breaks through around 11 30 am during November), we do understand the need for a coat. After all, our blog readers are from around the world and, even with Global Warming, there are some readers who are filling a chill as they read the blog. Here are 3 Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche mohair cape/coats. The blue and black plaid has actual arm holes and a discreet leather closure. It's very cocoon-y. The other two mohair coats aren't really coats, but cape wraps. Very typical of YSL in the late 1970s. One often sees a chic Parisian woman walking down the Rue Faubourg Saint Honore wearing such a cape. Are you that woman?

BILL BLASS IN BLACK AND WHITE

Sometimes you pine for a dress with absolutely no gimmicks. Purity of design becomes essential in a chaotic and over-accessorized world. Bill Blass direct from 1972 (the dress is dated and was sold at Bergdorf Goodman) is a black jersey halter attached to layers of off-white organza tiers. That's it. No bells and whistles.
