Dr. Jade

In 1905 Jean-Baptiste Morabito founded the House of Morabito in Nice, France. It began as a jewelry company making pieces for the Aristocracy and Royalty of Europe. Once having opened their first Parisian boutique in 1923 he began to experiment with exotic skins and leather creating precious handbags in deer and antelope and trunks in elephant and crocodile. The cases were embellished with tortoiseshell, ivory and crystals or mother-of-pearl and enamel. Having grown famous for their use of crocodile the company continued to grow over the following century. Still today Morabito is known for its French refinement and quality of product.

C'MON IRENE

Irene Lentz, better known simply as Irene, was an acclaimed multi Academy Award nominated costume designer for stars such as Ginger Rogers, Hedy Lamarr, Ingrid Bergman, and most famously for Lana Turner's midriff-baring and turban wearing wardrobe for The Postman Always Rings Twice. Irene also designed custom gowns for Bullock's Wilshire and this oyster satin gown with flocked floral motif is a spectacular example of Irene's designs of the 40s and 50s. Her costumes were notoriously costly and the gown below cost a small fortune when it was designed for the original owner in the late 1940s. Irene continued with costume design in the 1950s (often for Doris Day) but also concentrated on her successful boutique business. She took her life in 1962 and will be remembered for bringing glamour to fashion on and off screen. To learn more about Irene, go to http://www.irene-lentz.com/ where her great grand niece shares many historical photos, sketches, and anecdotes about this 20th Century fashion legend.

Better A Bag Than Art

When we hear the words "Black Velvet" we immediately think of those horrible paintings of Elvis and/or Jesus hanging in every Grandmother's den. We are thrilled that Chanel was able to do something fantastic with a material that has been ruined by hobby artists of the 70's. We now give you the king of all that is black velvet . . . the Chanel quilted double strap shoulder bag. The gold zipper has a leather zipper pull with a substantial gold ball on the end. There are two pockets, one small interior pocket with a zip closure and a large open exterior pocket. The inside and the underside of the straps are lined with black lambskin.

Mercury Approved

Mercury (Roman messenger of the Gods) would have loved to schlepp around Rome with this amazing Chanel messenger bag. This is one of those classic essential handbags that doesn't turn up much in the vintage market since it is atypical of Chanel designs. We have had the bag reconditioned, but there are still as few minor scratches on the front and sides. The last photo highlights the minor issues with the bag. This is the perfect file carrier for all you chic professionals.

SIX PACK

Question: Does one have to have a six-pack to wear this vintage Alaia abs-revealing crop top? Answer: No Comment. We do love this melon-colored pullover with bold seams and bat wing sleeves. We think it might look best with a smooth and flat belly, but one need not be an Olympic athlete to carry this off. This is is an ideal layer piece over a body suit or tank top. If you are a competitive body builder, you will find the cropped nature of this "sweat shirt" helpful during a difficult abdominal routine. There's a very Flashdance meets Jane Fonda's Workout circa the 1980s vibe to this Alaia design, but it's rendered sophisticated by the master of body conscious clothing.

TROPICAL JEAN MUIR

Most of our clients seem to be on civilized vacations at this time of the year. Not Team DECADES! For those in Aspen, you probably can't use this vintage Jean Muir ensemble. Stick with the fur trimmed nylon parkas and snow boots. However, for those resting on Harbor Island, we think this is perfect for the tropical weather. This two piece ensemble features a scoop neck suede tank with a ruffle bib and peplum waist printed with alternative blue, pink, and green stars and flowers. The coordinating elastic waist jersey skirt has the same print and is shaped a bit like a tulip with extra fabric that falls and gathers around the hips...yet refrains from adding bulk, but rather gives it a luxe harem-vibe. The top would work on its own with a pair of jeans and the skirt would look terrific with a white tank top and flip flops over a bikini bottom.

Jean Muir printed ensemble of suede peplum top and elastic waist skirt of black jersey, c. 1970s. Marked size 8, modern size 4 to small 6 SOLD

THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS PRESENT

It's not too late to give the gift that is really wanted: a Hermes black 40cm Vachette Grainee des Ardennes Birkin with gold hardware from 1998. Why is this the ultimate Christmas present? It's a 40 cm black Birkin with gold hardware -- casual for day and big enough for a weekend away. It's in a grained leather no longer made by Hermes and extremely unusual to find in the vintage market. It has just been lovingly refurbished by Hermes in Beverly Hills so it is in tip-top condition. However, realize our explanation is vain...it's a Birkin; it's Hermes; it's black and gold; the leather is highly desirable and very sturdy...blah blah blah. Get this under some one's Christmas tree...

Hermes Birkin in black Vachette Grainee des Ardennes with gold hardware, B stamp for 1998. Recondtioned by Hermes. Sleeper bag included SOLD
