V-Day by Schiaparelli

This spectacular dress comes to us from the fabulous designer and icon of surreal fashion, Elsa Schiaparelli. To put it bluntly, she was a genius. Schiaparelli is regarded in high esteem by both fashionistas and academics. She was the arch rival of Coco Chanel and became known for her distinctive and whimsical collaborations with artists such as Dali and Cocteau. To read more about this legendary woman click here.

Now, onto the perfect Valentine's evening gown. We love a good crepe, and this is a stunning example of the sensual fabric in a slate grey that has been enhanced with red ruby pearls. A very intricate Italian stitch is employed in the gown called trapunto. Every one of the ruby pearls has been circled by the trapunto stitch, creating a subtle but extraordinary quilted effect. It's a marvel that all the various textures create a cohesive style that seems totally complimentary, rather than a chaos of ideas.

The sweetheart neckline has been trimmed in ruffles and each red ruby pearl has been hand sewn in perfectly placed horizontal lines across the entire upper portion of the gown. A scoop back with prominent zipper and form fitting shape round out what can only be described as a gown for the ages. Seeing as it has survived since 1940 and seventy years later is still in remarkable condition, we feel this is another example of the timeless quality of great vintage couture from Decades. This is a chance to own a piece of fashion history.
