POLO TIPS

Are you attending the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Los Angeles next Sunday? I have already provided Style Tips on their website, but we can take it to second base!

Now, I can make your styling session super easy if you just pop into Decades. Naturally you want to look of the era, but at the same time, quite modern. How about this vintage Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche grey chiffon "tea dress." It may be from the 1970s, but it has a hint of the 1930s and add a large brim hat, sensible shoes, and a long strand of pearls and you will fit in without looking like you are en route to Trick or Treat. I love this dress worn with and without the coordinating poncho.

Doesn't this dress just beg for a flute of Veuve?

DOWN WITH THE RITZ, UP WITH THE STREET!

When Yves Saint Laurent invented "Saint Laurent Rive Gauche", this quote was his cri de coeur: Down with the Ritz, up with the street! His intuition was spot on, he became the cuturier who thought about the women of today. The ready to wear collection was a triumph and he was quoted by the press at the time as the genius who captured a powerful trend: the imperialism of youth. Yves started to design for the woman who was active, young, and working, and her need for comfortable and cool clothes with an affordable price tag, was reflected in all his Rive Gauche designs. This knit sweater with shawl collar comes from the 70's, from that same concept, comfortable and chic, it can be worn with jeans or over a dress. The tonal hues of red, cream and rosé bring a warm mood perfect for fall or early spring and the pockets make for a practical use. This sweater is the perfect addition to any woman's life, and because it is Yves Saint Laurent it will be for life.

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN CALIFORNIA

It is always sunny in California and a women can never have enough summer dresses especially the kind that can easily be worn for brunch in the afternoon and cocktails at night.
We just got this amazing Bill Blass dress, in a checkered and polka dot print. The pleated skirt and the white collar gives this dress a schoolgirl feel, but once its belted with the exaggerated black patent belt, the schoolgirl goes to college. A black Mary Jane shoe would complete the look, but don't be sensible with the shoe, a double platform Mary Jane would do just as well as a ten inch wedge.

TRUTH OR DARE

Madonna wore this Dolce & Gabanna body suit to the premiere of her documentary Truth or Dare in 1991. She wore it with high boots and not much else. She was going pant-less before Gaga was in Pampers. Naomi Campbell wore the body suit on the runway over a catsuit. We have the bustier version of this mixed media masterpiece in metallic disks, wooden fishes and flamingos, and variable rainbow of beads and rings. I am totally feeling both the body suit and bustier. It seems like everyone in Milan was feeling the midriff so this bustier let's you give a hint of your Gyrotonic-flat abs. Buy this before Lady Gaga or Rhianna snatch it up.

KISSING COUSINS

I love when two dresses from the same designer come from two different women, yet have something similar. Case in point: These two Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche dresses in black and shocking pink. The top dress is crepe thick black jersey with bold pink taffeta straps and equally triumphant bow in the back plus a tasteful slit at the rear, also. The second dress is a cocktail length black velvet with a V-shaped decollete and pink taffeta pouf sleeves and wide sash belt which we have knotted into a bow. They could be cousins, coudn't they. I would assume they are from the same collection, too. Which YSL girl are you?

Giorgio Di Sant'Angelo Swimsuit

Have you seen the Giorgio di Sant'Angelo retrospective currently up at the Phoenix Art Museum? I am sure it is wonderful and I hope I can escape before it before it closes in February next year. I love how varied the Sant'Angelo styles are from Gypsy and Native American inspirations; to stretch body-conscious jerseys; to wraparound gauze dresses that could be worn a multitude of ways; as well as, glitzy crystal confections. So often, the bodysuit was essential in a Sant-Angelo design. Body suits are so practical except when using an airplane bathroom. This black Lycra bodysuit has silver metal tiles placed in a diamond pattern. Now that Lady Gaga has made going bottomless acceptable, throw this on the next time you go shopping at Whole Foods. However, if you want to be a bit more complete, a sarong would be terrific with this. I would love it under a tuxedo, too. When all else fails, try this with a pair a jeans and silver hoops and metallic heels.

AIN'T NO PARTY LIKE A BOOK PARTY

Reading puts the fun back in fashion fundamentals. Our latest style scribling comes courtesy of our dear friend Michal Gregus. You Want Me To Do What is a hilarious diary of Michal's trials and tribulations behind the scenes of LA's chicest and craziest closets (No names. We swear.)

In fact, we enjoyed the book so much, we insisted on holding the book party and signing here at store. We too, have a little experience looking behind the curtain, Dorothy . . .

Be sure to show at the shop (downstairs level) on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7pm for the party. Michal plans to read from the book at 7:30pm, so you'll want to be firmly planted in your seat by then. Front row. Of course.

For a Q&A with Michal about the book, click here.

IN CASE YOU MISSED OUR MISSONI WINDOWS

In honor of the much-hyped and quickly depleted Missoni+Target collaboration, we put in our own Missoni windows featuring two 70s silk jersey caftans on the vintage side and two modern print dresses on the other side. I really wanted to get the store Missoni hand towels for the bathrooms and cups and plates for our kitchen, but I missed the boat. With eBay sellers pricing their Target merch for the price of collection Missoni, maybe I should head straight to Rodeo Drive! We will post pictures of our Fall window shortly.

SUMMER IS OVER

I was sort of hanging on to summer even though Friday was the last official day. Normally in Los Angeles it always feels like summer, but today is so overcast, humid, and dare I say, "fall-like." The change in seasons is good for biz. so let's celebrate by shopping for something in the season. This Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche dress has a print reminiscent of Missoni as well as, a silhouette reminiscent of Ossie Clark, but it is 100% Yves. Designed in 1976, the viscose blend dress will require a slip underneath, unless you don't mind showing what's going on underneath. What you reveal is up to you, but I can reveal that this is one fantastic dress with bell sleeves, an empire waist line, a fluid flowing skirt, and a palette of rust, jade, and black.
