DECADES DAILY FASHION FACT: BRING THE BLING

We believe it was Mae West who once remarked, " I never worry about diamonds. The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond." While Mae may have lived on a steady diet of baubles and bangles, these days jewelers count on Awards season as their main feed for the year. And with the Oscars right around the corner, we're expecting to see major sparkle on the carpet.

Apparently, on shining moment on the carpet is worth its weight in gold. So much so, that jewelers often loan, if not pay for the privilege of having starlets rock their rocks at arrivals. Harry Winston claims to be the first to lend diamonds to Jennifer Jones at the bequest of her husband-to-be David O. Selznick at the first Golden Globes in 1944. That night, Jones walked away with the Best Actress award for her role in "The Song of Bernadette". No doubt Jones' tour de force in the film was the deciding factor in her walking home with the golden statue, but as Elizabeth Taylor reminds us, the ice can always bring you luck.
