Roaming Roehm

Looking for that perfect ensemble for the Golden Globes? May we suggest this Carolyne Roehm taupe velvet with gold leopard pattern dress. We know, it sounds like there's a lot going on, but its really not. From a distance the gold pattern really stands out. Upon closer inspection the gold disappears and the rich taupe velvet pops. At the hip there is a bow with two long tassels finished on both ends with gold glass beads. The diagonal ruching below the bust is extremely flattering on the tummy, making it perfect for an event that might be photographed.

Symmetry is Beauty

At least that's what the "beauty experts" say, and this dress proves their point. Created by Carolyne Roehm in the late 80's, this fuchsia confection is perfectly symmetrical. Accented with four rhinestone encrusted buttons, (two in front and two in back), the fabric gathers at the neck and the waist allowing the material to blouse around the bust. We think this sassy little number screams "HOLIDAY PARTY!"

Canary Crossover

For the third year in a row, yellow is forecast to be a hot color for Spring 2010, so get a head start today! Yellow may not for everyone, as we know this from personal experience. If yellow is in your palette, congratulations! We have the perfect gown brought to you from one of our favorite designers Carolyne Roehm. The material is a canary yellow taffeta that will brighten up even the most dull occasion. The bustier top has been criss-crossed with ruched taffeta that loops around the shoulders. At the back the bustier dips down in V shape, rounding out the "old Hollywood glamour" neckline. Below, is a full skirt filled with white tulle for perfect amount of volume.

Roehm, Roehm on the Range

Carolyn Roehm was born in Missouri in 1951, after studying design at Washington University she went on to become one of the leading American designers of the time. The two dresses below are different takes on the color green.

The first dress is a teal blue/green silk jersey dress. The straps criss cross in the front and back, the bodice is ruched and the long skirt is flared at the bottom.

The second dress is a silk satin emerald green column dress. It has one shoulder and a side slit to the left. The dress is gathered and fitted at the waist. The hidden zipper is at the waist and is totally covered by snaps and an extra piece of material.

Roehm designed for women like herself, with active social lives along with intensive day activities. These dresses are two fine examples of the look and brand that Roehm was attempting to establish using her name.

INVESTMENT DRESSING

"Investment dressing" seems to be the cause celebre in the fashion world...suddenly! Hello? That's been a Decades selling point since day one and we have been in business since 1997! Decades has always been the antidote of disposable and trendy fashion. After all, it is vintage that dictates contemporary trends. Our mantra of "vintage that looks modern" has encouraged many a vintage virgin to take the plunge and wear something that is not "straight off the runway." As a matter of fact, vintage stores around the world have adopted this mantra and we love that the notion of looking at vintage not as costume or "period" clothing, but rather pieces that supplement and enhance a modern wardrobe has revolutionized the way people shop and dress. Once one wears vintage, one is soooo liberated from the confines of modern fashion trends.

Take this emerald silk Carolyne Roehm dress, for example. It is age-less. It could be 1960s, but it's not. It could be this season's Carolina Herrera, but it's not. It is from the late 1980s and is a perfect example of investment dressing. The round neck and slight cap sleeves are lady-like, yet the deep V in the back insures this dress is not Granny. With a gathered waist (try it with a great belt) that delivers a very lovely skirt, this dress can be day or evening at anytime of the year. In the winter, throw on some tights with the dress. In the spring, wear this under a belted trench coat. Have a cocktail party to attend? This works like a LBD, but in an alternative color. Take this from your day job to a chic affair simply by adjusting your accessories. Feeling like Audrey Hepburn, throw on some pearls. Want to make a more editorial statement? How about an Alaia belt at the waist? We have long admired Carolyne Roehm's designs. Although her namesake house was open only from 1985 to 1991, she made an imprint on women's fashion that fused the body-conscious designs of the 1980s with an East Side sensibility that was lady-like and perfect her socially active clients.
