POLAR VORTEX ESSENTIALS

Only if you MUST  leave the house, in order to survive these super cold temperatures (for those not in California) we recommend fur as the only piece of clothing that will keep you truly warm. We do understand the anti-fur movement and mostly agree with them but this is vintage fur we are talking about. In fact a zip up Pierre Cardin fox fur in orange with zipper pockets from the early seventies! It doesn't get better or cooler than this!

MINTY AND FROTHY

If you have great legs, this is your dress.  If you are artsy, this is your dress.  If you have a broad rib cage, this is your dress.  What is this dress?  Pierre Cardin Haute Couture from 1979 with a silver leather band attached to waves of textured organza in the lightest shade of mint.  The rib cage will fit a size eight, but can easily be taken in for a smaller bust.  I just see this on someone with terrific legs who won't be flustered when Bill Cunningham suddenly starts snapping away at your and your pic ends up in his The New York Times column on Sunday.

PIERRE CARDIN NOT FROM OUTERSPACE

The oeuvre of Pierre Cardin is quite vast.  Clothing from his first years designing are reminiscent of his time working with Balenciaga.  In the 1960s he took us on a journey to outer space with his futuristic fashions.  In the 1970s, Cardin softened and some of my favorite examples of his work remind me of classical Goddess dressing.  Of course if you didn't want to wear Cardin, you could probably wash your clothes in a Cardin-licensed washing machine as his name has been spread across something like 1000 products.  This oyster silk charmeuse and black velvet gown is from 1979 and evokes his softer side.  It's a rather clever design.  The black velvet waist band is ultra figure-flattering and narrows the torso as well as lengthen it.  The top and bottom can disguise a myriad of "things" be they flaws or things you just don't want to show.  I am thrilled because this isn't a baby size gown.  At Decades we love ALL women!  Everyone gets to be chic and sexy.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Italian born French designer Pierre Cardin, who turned 90 last July and who recently celebrated 60 years of modern thinking, is one of those designers who has always been inspired by the future. With his forward thinking he defined the 60's and 70's and crossed several fashion frontiers in his time. If you, like us, are not thinking about booking a flight to space with Virgin Galactic any time soon, you might need to be happy with galactic inspired designs especially by the man himself, Cardin. This white vinyl coat captures the fantasy of the future just as well, and we'd rather be well dressed than short 200,000 dollars. For now.

SEEK SEQUINS

Your relatives may think a Christmas sweater is the answer to dressing in the season, but I suggest something with a bit more panache and...sequins!  This Pierre Cardin mock-neck long sleeve "mermaid" dress has stripes of sequins in gold, purple, aqua, and amethyst set against a base of black sequins.  This is a perfect late 1960s hostess dress that may be based in mod styling, but hints at the decadent 1970s disco culture of the next decade.  A truly effortless dress that is instant glam without a lot of fuss.  Throw it on with heels or flats, strong eyeliner, a lip tint, and look super sexy.  Relish the fact that you are in vintage Cardin.

Fall In!

In the past year we have seen everyone from Balmain to Burberry incorporate the military look in their collection. Well leave it to Pierre Cardin, the master of geometrics, to be the first to give us his version of this ubiquitous trend from the 80's. This jacket has a double breasted button design in a V form which is visually slimming to all. The leather tassel serves as a perfect yet unexpected closure around the waist, now all you need is a black slim jean, your favorite stiletto and you're ready to go!

MOD woMEN

There's so much positive and well-deserved style talk about our favorite show Mad Men, which is so beautifully costumed by Janie Bryant. As the show enters the mid 1960s, the men are getting a little more mod and the women are moving from body clinging Marilyn Monroe silhouettes to more A-line shapes like this Pierre Cardin dress below. This is a Cardin dress from the 1980s revisiting Cardin's famous 60s mod silhouette and futuristic contract colors and pockets. It comes from a large Greenwich estate of a woman who befriended Monsieur Cardin and bought many of his eccentric pieces he did in the early 1980s. Many of those pieces are being sold at the fabulous Opening Ceremony boutiques during our Decades Pour Opening Ceremony collaboration. We kept this dress close to our heart so we hope some mad mod woman grabs this dress and enjoys it for the fall!

WHEN YESTERDAY LOOKED LIKE TOMORROW

Pierre Cardin, along with Andre Courreges and Paco Rabanne, designed futuristic fashions in the 1960s that near fifty years later still look like fashions of the future. This extraordinary Cardin black wool long sleeve dress features attached metal jewelry in the shape of a dramatic silver collar and coordinating cuffs. The sleeves are narrow and the armholes high, and dramatic slit makes this dress anything but matronly. Someone exceptionally stylish will snap up this dress and it will inevitably be the most modern dress in her closet...even if it was designed in the mid 1960s.

Tangerine-A-GoGo

If you have white patent gogo boots either of the dresses below would be a perfect match. The top dress is Pierre Cardin. The material it is constructed from is a wool crepe that has an amazing tangerine color. The dress has a quilted collar that drapes over the shoulders and comes to a point in the front. There is a framed panel that comes down the front from under the collar. The second dress was made by d'crenza, also in a tangerine light wool crepe. At the waist is a white leather attached belt that shows in the front and back, but is covered on the sides. Both of these dresses epitomize the 1960's mod fashion movement.
