SILVER ON SILVER

I love anything metallic.  Well not just anything, but the right touch of silver, gold, pewter, bronze...I don't mind it mixed together or as a total statement or maybe just as a highlight.  Take for example this Thierry Mulger ultra sexy LunBD.  The pleated silver metallic is beautifully draped across the dress for a fantastic and fresh silhouette that reminds me of good old Hollywood 1930s glam but is short and sexy as is expected for a siren dress from the 1980s.
So Silver is down with silver!

MARANT MAVENS ON THE MOVE

Who doesn't love Isabel Marant? Model-chic-in-her-skinnies, Marant has slowly and steadily built a name for herself over the past twenty years. And those trials and tribulations have paid off. After all, Marant, no longer just the queen of Franco fashion, is the reigning go-to for cool clothes hanging in the closets of uptown and downtown girls alike, no matter which urban jungle you call home.

And while Marant's wares may be in heavy rotation for each and every modern girl, her clothes owe vintage designers a big debt. She's clearly studied the greats and taken notes. From Mugler to Muir, you can see vintage details in each and every collection, be they in tone or trend. Even those beloved scrunchy boots that secured Marant's position as the guru of slouchy style reminisce of 70s disco-era foot candy.

So, for today's Through the Decades section on our website, I pulled a few Isabel Marant pieces and paired them with vintage pieces that have a similar vibe. From ruby paisley prints to stretchy draped dresses to from Studio 54 desert palettes to military flair, these pieces are musts for Marant girls. Personally, I've got my eye on the best ever Thierry Mugler jumpsuit known to man. But, that's just me.

HIGH LOW CHLOE

As we all know, New Yorkers love to talk and Big Apple dwellers love them some Chloe Sevigny dish. It seems that everyone I know kicked it with at Liquid Sky back in the day or spotted Sevigny as a vintage-clad teen skulking through the East Village when she allegedly eschewed handbags in favor of carrying her essentials in a white plastic deli bag. Several years later, Sevigny sightings are still as numerous as they were in the early 90s, when Sevigny interned at Sassy and was the subject of Jay McInerney's infamous New Yorker send-up, Chloe's Scene, and discussion/dissection of what makes an "It" girl.

Sigh. What happened to the "It" girl? Where has she gone? In all likelihood, she's left the city entirely, and is posting up somewhere in the country in a geodesic dome that's she built herself while she cans and pickles and quilts.

If you ask me, Chloe is one of, if not the, last truly great "It" girls. She eschews stylists and does her own hair and make-up and consistently knocks it out of the park on the red carpet. Her style is truly inimitable plus her affinity for vintage and her ability to know how to wear it in a way that always feels modern, makes her a truly fashionable gal. And I'm not the only one. I'm pretty sure that the gang over at Opening Ceremony finds her pretty chic as they've tapped her to collaborate on an in-house line of clothing season after season.

Of course, seeing Chloe in Decades picks is always a blast. Here's a few of my favorite Chloe Sevigny selections over the years:

True Colors

The 60's and 70's were the golden age when professional pleasure-seekers swarmed the beaches of Europe and as they tanned, in the process, they made movies, songs, they fell in love with the most beautiful people and made many fashion choices that reflected the time.

This month we give you South of France! We have curated on the website of DecadesTwo1 a Cannes-worthy collection as chic as these mediterranean beaches.

And from our very own Vintage Collection we'd like to introduce you to ROY-G-BIV (otherwise known as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). Welcome to the color spectrum! This Thierry Mugler band-dress showcases all the right places with its thoughtfully placed nude panels on the front and back--offering just enough "peek-a-boo" action to garner you attention. No wonder Mugler remains a beloved brand by both vintage fanatics and trend spotters. He always manages to highlight a woman's true colors!

And for a little proper taste of the South of France watch this clip from La Piscine with Alain Delon and Romy Shneider!

UNFUSSY AND CHIC

It is a true testament to a woman's style to make a jumpsuit look chic. That and very long legs! If you have both qualities, this Thierry Mugler 1980's linen vintage jumpsuit it's perfect for you. From the master who reinvented seduction and famous for being a true provocateur here in contrast is a light summery piece which you can wear with wedges strolling around town, or with espadrilles for a boat party. Plenty of silver accessories and sunglasses will help to dress it up so you can be one of the few women who can capture the jumpsuit allure.

IS SHE OR ISN'T SHE?

You know how the gossip rags love to speculate about a women's state: "is she or isn't she" when referring to a little bump. Is she pregnant? Did she put on weight? Is it coke bloat? Or did she have carbs? The list goes on and on. Well if you really want to give them something to talk about, throw on this very early Thierry Mugler cotton plaid sun dress with lurex stitching that will leave them guessing. Like the YSL I posted earlier, this dress is perfect for your summer travels and easy and breezy. However it is not limited to the summer, as I am confident this is an ideal transition piece for the fall and would be a cute romper over a Haider Ackermann long sleeve tee and boots when the temperature drops in a few months. But wear this right now! Throw it over a bikini! Take it on a picnic! This works in the Hamptons, Capri, or the 'Bu. And eat some carbs; and if you are preggers, celebrate the miracle of that bump.

IT'S BEEN A BUSY DAY!

It's been a pretty busy day here at 8214 and 8214 1/2 Melrose Ave, Decades headquarters! A lot of exciting things are going on, but I am catching my breath and sharing with you this fabulous Thierry Mugler black and white color-block wave dress. I probably sold this dress back in the late 1980s when I worked at Theodore in the Beverly Center and I loved this dress 25 years ago and I still love it in 2011. The neckline to the hem follows a great curved wave pattern that is both futuristic and organic at the same time. Now this dress is short, so make make sure your Physique 57 is workin'! -Cameron Thierry Mugler crepe black and white wave dress, c. late 1980s. Marked size 36, modern 4. Manfred Mania

Thierry (Manfred) Mugler was one of the most recognizable style icons of the 90's. His futuristic barbie power goddess aesthetic lured in some of the most amazing women of the day, including Rebecca Romijn and Jerry Hall. This specific dress is very similar to a dress/jacket set that Mr. Mugler designed for Jerry Hall that we had several years ago pictured above.

This dress is in the chinoiserie (chinese-esque) style. The combination Mandarin collar and abrupt short sleeve with black lacquer buttons is a classically Chinese combination. The use of black lace over oyster silk satin gives the whole piece a very elegant futuristic appeal.

Dayglow Denim Spells FUN FUN FUN!!!

The Thierry Mugler silhouette is unmistakable! The pronounced shoulder, cinched waist, and ample lapel reflect his ideal of a sexy, strong and powerful woman. The material is a very washed out, almost powder blue denim. The bottom of the jacket and the lapel are lined with dayglow yellow/green buttons, adding a fun futuristic vibe to the overall look of the piece.

Video Killed the Skirt Suit. . .

But we are bringing it back in a big way! This teal wool ribbed Thierry Mugler skirt suit is a impeccable representation of the Mugler woman. She's not afraid of color, doesn't take lip from anyone, and if she wants something she takes it. You, too, can be a Mugler woman; all it takes is a skirt suit and the right attitude, maybe a pair of black patent Louboutins and a blow-out for good measure. Now that you've met the Mugler woman, watch the video below to see the Mugler man.
