THE NEW NECK

How would you describe this neckline? There's a halter under a bugle bead wrap. Is there a fashion term for such a neckline? I think not, so let's just call this "the new neck." And it may just be my favorite neckline. I don't know much about the designer Jesper Nyeboe other than he was born in Denmark, worked for Anne Klein, Geoffrey Beene, and Gloria Vanderbilt; and his eponymous house existed for a very brief time in the late 1970s. He died too young at the age of forty-five in 1989. I am really intrigued by his work as I always have a penchant for designers that are under the radar or have been forgotten. This silk crepe gown would look chic worn poolside barefoot or dressed-up with some sparkly heels. The color is subtle and unusual, yet there is just enough razzmatazz with the bugle bead straps and the revealing back to make this a memorable dress for many an occasion: day or night; beach or disco; grass lawn or red carpet!

DUSTY ROSE SANS THE DUST

Sven Jesper Nyeboe may not be a designer with which many of our clients are familiar. He only designed under his own label, simply called Jesper Nyeboe, for a few years in the late 1970s. Born in Denmark, he came to the United States in 1968 to work for Anne Klein and then for Geoffrey Beene. In 1976, he worked briefly for Gloria Vanderbilt and then opened his own house before returning to work for Mr. Beene from 1980 to 1987. At his untimely death in 1989 at the young age of 45, Nyeboe was working for Hanae Mori.

This is the first time Decades has encountered the work for Nyeboe and we are enchanted. The duo-halter rose crepe goddess gown makes for a striking neckline with hematite-hued bugle bead straps. The waist gathers and is defined by a sash belt. The fluid skirt moves sensually. Although the dress may be what we call "dusty rose," this gown appears to have escaped any dust and may be unworn. From the closet of a successful singer of the 1960s and 1970s, we will be posting more of her clothing. She had two wardrobes: one for performance and one for balls and social events. She laughed that her performance clothing didn't survive the long stints in Las Vegas or touring Asia with Dean Martin, but the clothing she wore when she wasn't on stage has lovingly been stored. We will post some dresses by Galanos, Oscar de la Renta, Sarmi, and Teal Traina in the next week, but we wanted to start with this dusty rose of a gem.
