LITTLE BLACK DRESS: THE UNIFORM OF WOMEN OF TASTE

The story of the little black dress starting form the 20's courtesy of Coco Chanel and remaining a stable uniform of all chic women through Decades, is not going away. These four wonderful dresses remind us that when a black dress is just right there is nothing else to wear in its place. From Christian Dior to Gianni Versace, from Norman Norell to of course Chanel these four options will freshen up your wardrobe and remain classics at the same time. Try wearing these with flats for a more relaxed and updated look.

IT'S THAT THE NORELL DRESS THAT EVERYONE KNOCKS OFF?

Norman Norell was great at a LBD, but not in a Parisian mode.  A Norell LBD was American chic and continues to be oft-copied.  Case in point: this round neck dress with gathered waist and large hip pockets.  Fully functional and a wee-bit sporty, no? There is nothing anachronistic about this dress.  It's totally relevant today and we see designers doing variations of this wool crepe dress season after season.  I would suggest adding a "sassy" bright belt and shoes for a punch of color.  How would you style this 60s dress to keep it 21st century chic?  And how do you think Norell's iconic LBD compares to that of Givenchy?  Tweet me your thoughts as I love hearing from you! @CameronDecades

WHAT IS HOT ABOUT HAUTE COUTURE?

With all the couture shows well under way in Paris, Dior was the one that impressed me the most because of its modernity. Raf Simons questioned what couture is, its purpose in these times and suggested a new way to look and wear couture. It made me feel the same way as I always felt about Norman Norell's mermaid dresses from the 60's. Well made, luxurious and modern.
Considered an American couturier, there is no doubt to the high quality of his craft, but the simplicity of the silhouettes and the currentness that he brought to a new decade, was what the new modern woman wanted and needed. As Raf Simons pushes forward at Dior, the fashion world can not ignore the questions that he is asking. What is hot about Haute Couture if it is not for innovative, beautiful and wearable clothes.

A GRAND NIGHT

With New Year's Eve just five days away, what will you do and more important what will you wear?  I will probably be in J. Crew sweats and asleep at 9 30 pm PST.  However, I am counting on some fabulous Decades clients to really represent and party like it's 1999 or 2013 or the end of the world or whatever apocolapytic curse may be raising havoc on us.  If you want to do it and look timeless at the same time, I am smitten with this sensational Traina-Norell ball gown/evening dress which is the epitome of glamour.  When you look back at pictures of yourself from NYE won't you prefer to look like an icon and not a fashion victim?  This 1950s ball gown (unless you truly elite petite the length will hit your ankles or above) has copper sunflowers with metallic gold centers throughout the organza fabric.  The sweetheart neckline with ruched bosom and V-straps also has a figure flattering belt and full skirt over crinoline.  They just don't make dresses like this anymore because it is prohibitive unless you are in the market for Haute Couture.  A gorgeous pump and diamond studs and you are set.  It is so easy to be timeless as we enter a new year becuase this dress will stop time.

VERY VICTORIA

I am so happy to be back home in LA.  In the last three weeks I have been to Paris, London, Taormina, and NYC.  If you followed me on Twitter you would have been first hand at all the Haute Couture shows, the opening of the James Bond retrospective at the Barbican, and the debut of Dolce & Gabbana's Alta Moda collection.  This has absolutely nothing to do with this pretty in pink dress below, but I've missed you guys so it's good to be able to have some fashion talk with you.
Victoria Beckham is doing gangbusters business selling clean 1960s inspired dresses with little affectation and tremendous wearability.  Who would have that something so basic and essential would lead to such a successful brand?  Well, she's a smart and stylish woman who realized day wear need not be boring and actually needs to exist since so many designer brands fill their stores solely with evening and cocktail.  VB has you covered for day.  But she isn't reinviting the wheel!  This Norman Norell baby pink wool pique dress has long sleeves, a round neck, and an optional white belt.  The only ornamentation are tonal buttons going up the back.  I also love this dress sans belt for a more relaxed feel.  Perfect worn casually with a chic little Capri sandal or even a pair of Keds for a full-on WASPY moment.  Throw on a princess heel and you can dress this dress up for anything but a BBQ.
Did you miss me?

CAMERON SILVER PACKS FOR THE FRENCH RIVIERA

There is no doubt that Cameron Silver has a fabulous life. After his smashing appearance at the Met Ball, he is en route to Cannes to attend the premiere of Versailles '73 - An American Runway Revolution by filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper, that celebrates the victory of American Fashion in France in 1973 in an iconic fashion face off at Versailles. Narrated by Cameron Silver, the documentary tells the story of what was to be a fundraiser to restore Versailles that turned into a competition between French Haute Couture and American Ready to Wear. Americans won.
"This is an important film," says Cameron, "not only because it's the story of American designers getting international attention for the first time and kicking ass over the French. But it also has important political overtones, because this show actually broke the color barrier on the runways."

And to celebrate American fashion and the French city by the sea here are some nautical inspired options. Get your hands on these fun inspiring pieces and head for the sea.

GORGEOUS IN GALANOS

Some have turned their noses down at SoCal style, but if there's anyone in the world to turn the haters into lovers, it's James Galanos. Period. Galanos is perhaps single-handedly responsible for creating old school Hollywood Glam. Think luxurious fabrics and fur, exquisite draping, luscious fabrics, meticulous cuts and ornate detailing, such as his iconic gilded butterfly.

Personally, I love Galanos' rags to riches story, which proves that hard work, belief in one's self, and following your heart's desire to be creative pays off. Turns out, taste and elegance can come from Jersey. Shoresters, take note. Here's a few fun fashion facts from the life and work of James Galanos:

Galanos first arrived on our sunny shores as a youngster determined to make a name for himself in fashion. After a dissapointing start in New York as a clerical assistant in sartorial salon of Hattie Carnegie (Pauline Triegère and Norman Norell got their start at Carnegie's), Galanos moved to L.A. to design for a husband and wife team, the Lesavoys. Sadly, the duo divorced and Galanos lost his gig.

Of course, if you're having on trouble on 7th Avenue, there's just may be a place for you on Sunset. Jean Louis, head designer at Columbia Pictures, hired Galanos to sketch ensembles for pictures. He then traveled to Paris, working for Robert Piguet. After another frustrating try at designing in New York, where Galanos was let down by design positions which didn't encourage him to express himself creatively, the upstart up and hightailed it back to Tinseltown and launched a line of his own. Upon seeing Galanos' creations, which looked haute couture though were pret-a-porter pieces pronounced that Galanos would soon be a household name.

And he was because the movies came calling again. Galanos designed ensembles for icons such as Rosalind Russell, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor not to mention Grace Kelly and Marlene Deitrich who sought Galanos' "glamour quotient".

And frankly, who doesn't need a little glamour sprinkled like fairy dust into their lives. Even if you don't have a photo opportunity in your immediate future, this dress is guaranteed to make you feel as your life is one red carpet that you're meant to float down and through, always gracious, elegant and of course, glamourous.

Isn't he inspiring? Both the man and his clothes give a gal reason to seek the stars. Perfect for our town.

MAD WEATHER

We have been on a Norell kick lately and since April showers are upon us, we couldn't stop thinking about the perfect coat to wear. Obviously the influence of Mad Men these days is apparent. Every Monday morning we browse our closets for something 60's inspired. And with the temperature in the 60's, a navy double-breasted coat is the perfect chic choice. Norell knew how to make a perfect simple dress or a coat, that took you from day to evening. This Norell has everything, a little bit of retro, a little bit of chic and a lot of class.

YELLOW NOT SO MELLOW

Yellow is definitely the new black. I keep seeing chic girls and guys with lots of yellow. I even bought a pair of yellow Jil Sander jeans. I guess we can call it a happy color and with bright colors being of particularly popular, why not follow the sun, and be golden? This Norman Norell dress is another one of his 60s "tee-shirt" dresses (I bet he would hate to think of a dress of his as being a tee-shirt dress) in cotton pique with long sleeves, a mock neck, and two pockets at the hip. It could be Jil Sander today, but isn't is cool to say it's vintage Norell? It is quite bright in person by the way. In these photos it looks like vibrant.

PREPPY CHIC

Here is another example of the great Norman Norell and an ideal preppy chic day dresses. This one is short sleeve with a mock neck and wide belt with Norell's oversized buttons that are rather iconic in his designs. Made of heavy pique cotton, I like to this this is the epitome of tee-shirt dressing, but tres chic. Keep it modern with a Levi's denim jacket and a pair of kicks for a casual look that is All American chic. Although Norell was famous for his mermaid dresses, he also was a great minimalist, and this reminds us of how Norell made a wardrobe for Park Avenue's finest to wear day and night.

COMPLETELY OBSESSED RIGHT NOW WITH OUR NORELL COLLECTION

We just got in the most chic collection of 1960's Norman Norell day dresses from the son of a recently departed San Francisco socialite who was well known for her sartorial talents as well as her decorating abilities. She kept her clothing in impeccable condition and her son was quite delighted that we were so entranced with her mom's wardrobe. These dresses have been flying out of the store so we didn't even get a chance to photograph every single one, but the first one we are posting in the perfect pastel mint wool belted "tee-shirt" dress with a slight mock neck and a very signature Norell obi belt with two large buttons. It's completely minimal and effortless and maybe it was the past week in Charleston that has me feeling particularly patriotic, but I do think American fashion of the 1960's and 1970's really offerred some of the best day wear. This thick cotton picque dress also has two pockets at the hips. This is pure American 60's mod chic. Channel your inner C.Z. Guest, or go preppy-punk with a pair of those amazing Valentino 50th Anniversary limited edition black patent mocassins with sexy gold pyramid studs.
